The liver is the body’s main organ for processing toxins for elimination. This elimination process is called detoxification and exists in two phases. Phase I detoxification transforms toxins into derivatives that are easier for the body to metabolize, while phase II detoxification includes at least five different pathways that transform these intermediary substances into readily excreted compounds. Nutrients can help protect the liver from toxin exposure, promote phase I detoxification, and/or promote various phase II detoxification pathways. Detoxification can also include support for healthy elimination and cellular protection/detoxification.
